چکیده

This paper introduces a new technique which directly predicts the failure patterns of laterally loaded masonry panels based on the results of existing typical panels tested in the laboratory. The technique is based on the use of the cellular automata (CA). In this technique, the CA modelling is established to propagate boundary effects to zones within a panel. The corresponding rules for the state values of zones are derived from the proposed CA model, using appropriate transition functions. These state values are then used by the CA to establish zone similarity between two panels. Finally, the zone similarity is applied to establish locations of cracks on the panel. The technique is used in a novel way which eliminates the use of any numerical tools such as finite element analysis (FEA). This technique is purely based on comparing the failure pattern of the base panel (a panel whose failure pattern is known from the laboratory tests) and unseen panels (panels not tested in the laboratory by the authors or their failure pattern are unknown) subjected to the same type of loading and with similar boundary conditions to predict the failure load of the unseen panels.

Using Artificial Intelligence Techniques to Predict the Behaviour of Masonry Panels

Laboratory experimental data is often erroneous. This error is more apparent in data obtained from testing of anisotropic composite materials such as masonry wall panels. In this paper data colleted from the laboratory tests of masonry panels is presented. Methodologies for reducing (correcting) error in laboratory tested data are discussed. The concept of stiffness/strength corrector to model ...

Cellular Automata Method for Mapping Cracking Patterns of Laterally Loaded Wall Panels with Openings

Article history: Received: 08.10.2013. Received in revised form: 21.11.2013. Accepted: 25.11.2013. This study presents a cellular automata (CA) method to map the cracking patterns of laterally loaded masonry wall panels with openings. Firstly, the central point displacement of each CA cell is calculated from the finite element method (FEM). Then, the displacements are normalized to form the CA ...

Generality of Using Correctors to Predict the Behaviour of Masonry Wall Panels

The highly composite and anisotropic nature of masonry, which is a result of the variation in the properties of the masonry constituents, makes it very difficult to find an accurate material model to predict its behaviour satisfactorily. Current research by the authors has focused more closely on the behaviour of laterally loaded masonry wall panels using model updating techniques supported by ...

Micro-modeling of Masonry Infilled RC Moment Resisting Frames to Investigate Arrangement of Compressive Diagonal Struts

Accurate modeling of masonry has been a major concern of the researchers in the past decades. Besides reinforced and unreinforced masonry structures, masonry can be found in frame structures as infill panels which are used as partitions and/or external walls. These elements role as a part of structure and introduce a large degree of nonlinearity into the system. In this study, a micro-modeling ...

Analysis of Masonry Infill Panels Retrofitted with FRP Sheets in R/C Frames

Masonry infill walls are often used as non-structural elements. According to the past structural failure, ignorance of interaction between infill walls and enclosed frame may lead to the different seismic response for non-ductile building frames. The main contribution of this paper is to analytically investigate the behavior of reinforced concrete with masonry infill panels as participating str...
